What is LappyTrack? |
LappyTrack strives to be your best defense against laptop thieves. These criminals rely on stealth and anonymity to work their evil but we have gone to great lengths to see that LappyTrack can hide from them and send for help when they are least expecting it. LappyTrack's installation procedure allows it to be disguised so that it will be virtually unrecognizable even if a thief searches your hard drive for it because each installation is unique and customized by its owner. Once installed, LappyTrack will try to send a report of where your laptop is on the internet every time someone logs in to it, and randomly every 3 or 4 hours after that. Thieves would have no clue they were being tracked until the police arrived at their door to collect them and your laptop. Of course, you can try to prevent the theft in the first place by placing a sticker on your laptop warning potential thieves that they will get caught if they try to steal your laptop, but that could be a double-edged sword that provides them with more information than you want to reveal. We do, however, heartily recommend placing conspicuous warnings in dormitories, workplaces, and other such areas that LappyTrack is encouraged on those premises. Potential thieves would then know that at least some of their intended victims are protected and this element of uncertainty would be a more powerful deterrent for those who hope that if they look hard enough for long enough, they will eventually find a LappyTrack installation on a particular laptop. We are making stickers, t-shirts, coffee mugs, and other paraphernalia available for this purpose.
Once installed, the reports that LappyTrack sends are readily available to you online when you sign into your account (an example is shown below). They contain not only the IP address of your laptop at last sighting, but a full report of the route followed by the message while contacting the LappyTrack servers. This would prevent any attempt a sophisticated thief might make to "spoof" their address from going undetected, even though it is unlikely that someone with sufficient expertise to do that would be stealing laptops. These reports are stored for a full week for subscribers and can be easily viewed or downloaded to provide the information necessary to retrieve your laptop quickly and easily if the need arises. When logged into their accounts, subscribers can enable a 'red alert' flag that will tell our servers to send an eMail immediately whenever they are contacted by that laptop. This instant notification saves subscribers from having to log into their accounts frequently to check the status of their missing computers. Also, if you followed our recommendations when you created your account, your laptop's manufacturer, model name, serial number, and other identifying information will be at your fingertips whenever you log in. Everything the police would need to find and identify your laptop is immediately available in the event of a crisis. To get started securing your laptop click here.
